Dewi Sartika was born in Cicalengka, on December 4, 1884. She was the leading figure and pioneer for the education for the women in Indonesia.
Her parents
R. Rangga Sumanegara and R.A. Rajapermas allowed her to go to school. When Dewi
Sartika was a child she often pretended to be a teacher while playing with her
friends. In 1902 she realized that there was a lack of education at schools to
prepare girl students to be housewives, so she pioneered education for the
woman. The most important subjects at that time were crocheting, cooking,
sewing, reading, and writing.
On 16
January 1904, she founded a school named “Sekolah Istri” at Bandung Regency’s
Pendopo by the help of her grandfather R.A.A. Martanegara and Den Hamer. In
1910, the school name changed into “Sekolah Kaoetamaan Isteri”. This school
developed to some areas such as Garut, Tasikmalaya, and Purwakarta.
In 1929,
her school changed its name to “Sekolah Raden Dewi” and had its own building.
However, there were some problems arising, especially economic problem. Her
husband, Raden Kanduruan Agah Suriawinata helped to solve the problem.
Dewi
Sartika died on September 11, 1947 in Tasikmalaya while she was evacuating from
Bandung due to Independence war. On December 1, 1966, she was acknowledged as a
National Hero by the Indonesian government.
